Troop Pay Cuts ‘Break Govt Rules’

David Cameron has breached the Government's own rules by slashing troops' pay, it has emerged.

Ex-Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth (pictured) accused the PM of betraying the Military Covenant with the move.

He revealed the MoD pledged three years ago, in its solemn pact with the Armed Forces, to use an independent body to set wages.

Troops will lose £1,300 a year due to the one per cent cap on public sector pay rises introduced two weeks ago. Mr Ainsworth ambushed Mr Cameron during PM's Questions.

He asked: "Is freezing the pay of privates and corporals without reference to the Armed Forces Pay Review Body, a breach of the military covenant?"

Mr Cameron ducked the question, insisting the Government tried to help forces personnel.

Last night the MoD said pay rules were being honoured — but it also insisted ministers could set limits for an independent body and even overrule it. The move to slash troops' wages has been widely condemned by MPs and top brass.

Former CGS Lord Dannatt said: "The pay review body must do its work without restraints. The soldiers are looking after us, so we must look aft
er them."
